What is a DSE Assessment?
A DSE (Display Screen Equipment) assessment is a report with recommendations produced by a qualified assessor to instruct a DSE user how to sit and adjust/ use their workstation equipment in line with the HSE guidelines to prevent RSI (Repetitive Strain Injuries) or related injuries such as Carpel Tunnel and other Musculoskeletal disorders.
The benefits of DSE Assessments
If you have a team member working on their laptop at the kitchen table in their home, you cannot expect the same level of productivity from that person as you would if they were in the office working at their correctly positioned desk. Having a qualified assessor making recommendations to the work area can improve productivity and can limit or prevent any injuries that could be sustained resulting from a poor workstation.
Who does it apply to?
The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations apply to workers who use DSE daily, for an hour or more at a time. We describe these workers as ‘DSE users’. This applies to Home and Office workers.
What the law says:
“Homeworkers and teleworker. If a DSE user is employed to work at home, or at other locations away from Guidance 1 (4) Work with display screen equipment Page 14 of 68 Health and Safety Executive their main base, the DSE Regulations apply - whether or not the workstation is provided in whole or in part by the employer”
